The Country Shul Community Torah Scroll Scribing Campaign’s objective is to create lasting personal connections between the Torah and individuals and families from across the spectrum of the broader Jewish community of the Richmond Hill & Vaughan area.
It is said that one who writes even one letter in a Torah Scroll is considered to have written the entire Scroll, because if it were missing even one letter the Scroll would be invalid and unusable. So the idea is to have this Scroll written with many unfinished letters, and to invite many individuals- perhaps a thousand or more- from the broader Richmond Hill & Vaughan community to scribe a letter in this Scroll.
The Scribing Campaign is designed to be a milestone experience in the lives of our letter-writers. Our program will create a holistic Torah Scroll experience, with each letter-writer invited to a Torah Scroll event and visiting multiple stations with hands-on demonstrations of the various crafts and processes that go into creating a finished Scroll. This all then culminates in the actual Scribing, together with a Scribe, who sits down and personally introduces and connects the writer with the precious “Os”, or letter, they will scribe. The writer now “owns'” that letter, and becomes an invigorated partner in the Scroll, invited back for the dedication ceremony and celebration of the completed Torah, and back again when the letter is read in the weekly Torah Reading cycle at our Synagogue Services. As well, we gift him or her with a letter in their Bar or Bat Mitzva reading, which will bring the writers back in contact with their personal Scroll many times throughout life.
